Our Next Production

Beverley Theatre Company - Press Release – September 2022

Jekyll and Hyde – Beverley Memorial Hall, 16th – 19th November 2022. Curtain up 7.30pm.

Beverley Theatre Company (BTC) are pleased to announce that their next production will be ‘Jekyll and Hyde’, adapted by Nicholas Briggs from the famous novella by Robert Louis Stephenson.

The story of the doctor who transforms into the evil Mr. Hyde is well known and has had many adaptations over the years on both the large and small screens, including Spencer Tracy’s film version of 1941 and the BBC version of 2007 starring James Nesbitt.

This new adaptation has been written by Nicholas Briggs (famous as the voice of the Daleks in ‘Doctor Who’), and, whilst following the events of the original story, is told through the interactions and flashbacks of the solicitor Gabriel Utterson, his cousin Richard Enfield, his friend Dr. Hastie Lanyon and Inspector Newcomen of Scotland Yard.

Previous productions of the play have had very good reviews –

‘..on its first night it held its thriller season audience from start to finish.’ Nottingham Post

‘..with great banter between upstanding lawyer and down-to-earth detectives…this felt like a

fresh interpretation of a timeless classic.’ Henley Standard

‘…a satisfying and disturbing interpretation of Stephenson’s novella.’ Basingstoke Gazette

The play is directed by Emma Drew, a stalwart of BTC who will be familiar to our audience from her wonderful portrayal of Geraldine Grainger in our production of ‘The Vicar of Dibley’, and sees one of our largest casts of recent times. Doctor Jekyll himself is played by David Bugg, our longest-serving member, whilst Mr. Hyde is portrayed by our current Chairperson, Tony Musgrave. Jekyll’s friends, Gabriel Utterson and Hastie Lanyon, are played by Nev Slater and Chris Dunnachie respectively, whilst the long arms of the law are played by Colin Walls as the Constable and, making a welcome return to BTC, Steve Jordan as Inspector Newcomen. Fellow regulars Sam Kneeshaw, Cheryl Giles, Bill Watts, Pat McKenziem and Cathy Derrick also return, whilst debuts are made by an impressive six new members –

Charlie Cross, Sue Allan, Jodie Fletcher, Alison Healey, Sally Foster and Samuel Drew.

The play will be performed with kind permission from Red Raygun Ltd, at 7.30pm, from Wednesday 16th November until Saturday 19th November at the Beverley Memorial Hall, Lairgate, Beverley with a licensed bar (except Wednesday). Tickets are priced at £9.50 for adults, £8.50 for concessions. Tickets can be purchased either:
